Patience

I think of myself as a very patient person. It helps to keep my stress level down and it’s especially helpful in my work as an elementary teacher. However, when it comes to purchasing something online and waiting for the package to arrive, I am about as patient as a spoiled child.

In fairness, it used to be that items shipped would arrive in a week, maybe less. That, I could handle. If you live in an urban area and you get your Amazon orders delivered by lunchtime, you have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about. But in the past year, UPS and USPS have given us country folk the shipping shaft. Everything takes two weeks to arrive! And one carrier is no better than the other. UPS only delivers here 3 days per week now, and one can’t trust the USPS tracking system. I recently purchased the Mini Blooms and Sprigs die set from the Spellbinders’ website. I placed the order on the 24th of February and I received it yesterday! For 6 days USPS could not update their tracking to show where my package was, other than to say it was “arriving late”. That was 14 days of waaaaaiting.

The good thing about having this set come on a Saturday is that I could spend all afternoon playing around with it! I first die cut several of each flower out of white card stock and then the stem and sprig out of several shades of green. I shaded the flowers with Ranger distress inks in Worn Lipstick and Spun Sugar with a blending brush. I knew I wanted to create a center piece that had a sentiment with greenery above and below, but there was a bit of trial and error getting it to look the way I wanted. The green strip in the center is cut from a die in the Everyday Details set from Stampin Up.

The card base is 5.5 x 4.25 and the white layer is only slightly smaller. I adhered the center strip along with its sentiment and the greenery with liquid glue, and used foam adhesive for the flowers and for attaching the white layer to the card base. Lastly, I embellished with some colored gems. I love the way the colors look together! I’m thinking I’ll use this for an upcoming retirement later this spring.

Today I made a Mother’s Day card using more of the pieces I cut yesterday. This time I used Copic markers to color the blooms. I added the flowers to a wreath stamped in Ranger’s Green Fern archival ink and fussy cut around the outside. The sentiment is from a Lawn Fawn set I borrowed from a dear and amazingly talented crafty friend. I am in love with that green ribbon! If I were to redo this one, I would use a basket weave embossing folder on the bottom half of the card. It wasn’t until I looked at the photo again that I realized how naked it looks without any embellishments! 😂 I’ll have to back and add a little something.

Thanks for stopping by! It’s beginning to feel a bit like spring despite today’s 6 inches of snow. I’m ready for all the flowery cards! Come back soon to check them out!

Birthday Surprises

Do you prefer markers or watercolors? I was only recently introduced to alcohol ink markers thanks to my friend, @the_paper_tinker (Find her on instagram!) I still think I prefer using watercolors, though. It seems easier to me to adjust colors. I suppose, like with anything, it takes a bit of practice. And, maybe a whole lot more markers!! 😁

Here is another interactive card using Stampin Up’s Hooray For Surprises die set. Underneath the pull tab, I stamped the sentiment Hope your birthday is wonderful! from the matching stamp set.

This card is for my mother-in-law who is blessed to be celebrating her 91st next week!! ❤️

The other interactive birthday card I made this weekend uses the 2022-2024 In Colors from Stampin Up and the same Hooray For Surprises stamp and die set. Under the pull tab is the sentiment May your birthday be as wonderful as you are!

For The Record 🎶

Two music cards in a week! 🎶

I felt the need to offer my husband a little reminder of how I feel in a language he speaks! 😁 I used the retired For The Record stamp set from Stampin Up with Sweet Sorbet cardstock for the background and ink for the heart.

I had fun personalizing the album cover! There were so many great songs filled with meaning from our early years together. I’m dating myself, no doubt, but this song was a favorite of ours way back when. 🎶 What album cover would you choose if you were to make a card like this?

I love making cards that are interactive, so when I adhered the album cover to the background, I only glued the edges of three sides so the record could slide in and out. The sentiment on the record is also from the For The Record stamp set. Finally, I used the smallest rectangle from the SU Everyday Details die set and heat embossed another stamp sentiment from the FTR set.

If you search on Pinterest for this stamp set, you’ll find that it is so versatile, particularly if your people love music! There are lots of really great cards to CASE allowing for your own personal touch! Though retired, a quick check over at ebay shows it’s still very much available.

What’s in a Name?

The moment Creative Cardistry was suggested to me, I knew it could work as the title for my blog. I really liked the play on words between artistry and Cardistry. OK, the Creative part I struggled with just a bit because I don’t think of myself as having an abundance of creativity. But, since I actually do create cards, I went with it. Thank goodness this awesome card-making and paper craft community encourages CASEing cards, too! Copy And Share Everything is my go to when I get a new set of stamps or dies and I’m staring at a blank white piece of cardstock! Does that ever happen to you?? The more I’ve worked with particular materials, the easier it has been to let my own ideas flow.

The cards I chose for my blog header are ones that began as a happy accident, and they are ones I make over and over again because I really love how they come out. Awhile ago, I came across some old pieces of watercolor paper I used when I was learning (still am!) to blend colors of paint. I almost just tossed them when I remembered this heart-shaped die I picked up somewhere. (I tried looking up the manufacturer and while I’ve found similar ones, I haven’t seen this exact one.) Anyway, I cut one of those pieces of watercolor paper into small sections and layered the heart over the top. I attached it to a card base and added a simple banner sentiment. Now when I make these cards, I’m more apt to add an extra layer to help make the color pop and include embellishments such as ribbon and bling in coordinating colors.

This is such an easy card to make and work for any occasion! If you like combining art forms, you’ll definitely want to give it a try using any filigree-type or cutout die you have. If you love the hearts, as I do, I bet this Memory Box die from franticstamper.com would be lovely. Or, check out these options from Inlovearts.

If you do decide to make a card like this, please come back and share with me!

Let’s Start With a Little Music

I’ve seen many versions of this card on Pinterest throughout the years. I had saved it to my To Make Someday board. My husband is a talented musician who plays, among other instruments, guitar so naturally I thought I’d make it for him at some point. But today my daughter said she was in need of a card for her boyfriend whose birthday is tomorrow. This is the one she asked me to make. The two cards I CASEd were this one from Paula Reid at YellowBearStamping.com and another from a blog site that is no longer in use, sadly. I really love the patterned paper used in that last one!

The guitar body is free-drawn onto brown textured card stock. I used my smallest three nesting circles to create the opening. The bridge is made using tiny silver brads I had on hand, and the strings are strands from silver metallic embroidery floss. Attaching those strings was the fussiest part of the project but, in the end, I am really pleased with how it came out.

Happy Birthday, Jed, and here’s to you for inspiring my first post on Creative Cardistry!
